The Science of Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling

RF microneedling combines the power of skin needling with the delivery of energy resulting in improvements in both skin quality and skin laxity. Radiofrequency is a non-optical energy source developed to overcome some of the limitations of optical-based systems (such as laser or IPL). Radiofrequency is a lower energy wavelength that is the same wavelength we use to listen to radio, watch TV or text and penetrates the skin as an alternating electric current and because of this, it is an excellent technology for melanin-rich skin.

Tailored Treatment

WHAT IS RADIOFREQUENCY MICRONEEDLING?
RF microneedling has the ability to be delivered with a variety of settings and needle depths allowing targeted delivery of energy to treat specific problems. An understanding of what you are trying to achieve is an important part of RF microneedling results. For example, bulk heating of the subcutaneous fatty tissue can result in loss of volume which can be devastating in certain individuals who’s high-yield category of aging is volume loss.
How does Radiofrequency Microneedling work?
RF microneedling works by causing of a controlled injury which results in creation of new collagen and elastin. Not all RF microneedling devices are equal and newer technologies have refined the delivery of RF to minimize patient discomfort and undesired side effects (i.e. insulated needles, monopolar vs. bipolar delivery).

Skin Effects of RF Microneedling

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF RF MICRONEEDLING?
Because RF microneedling creates both microchannels with delivery of energy, this technology helps improve problems with skin quality such as fine lines and wrinkles, texture, acne scars, or large pores. The low energy delivery of radiofrequency adds the benefit of improving mild skin laxity (sagging skin). With deeper needle depth, you may cause selected target lipolysis (fat loss). RF microneedling is also an effective tool for the treatment for hyperhidrosis (excess sweating).

The broad range of treatment options make this a favorite technology and high-yield return on your investment but also must be performed correctly to achieve desired results. This technology is one of Dr. Christie’s favorite for treating ethnic skin. At Curated Beauty we try to maximize the skin needling channels and create combination treatments to maximize results by infusion of products that target skin concerns. Treatment combinations are customized for patient concerns and downtime.

Know Before Your Go

PREPARING FOR RF MICRONEEDLING
Energy devices represent a controlled injury to your skin. In order to control the injury we want to ensure that you prepare your skin by avoiding excessive skin trauma at least one week leading up to treatment (this may be longer depending on your skin health and individual modifications will be made in advance of your treatment).
  • Avoid excess sun or unprotected sun exposure
  • Do not using tanning products two weeks prior to treatment
  • Review active exfoliants or retinoids with our team prior to scheduling treatment. We will sometimes require holding for one to two weeks prior
  • Avoid skin irritants such as excessive exfoliation, steam rooms, or aggressive massaging. It is also not that you start new skin products just prior to scheduled treatment unless directed by one of our Skin Specialists
  • For men, please shave the day prior to treatment to minimize skin irritation and maximize hair removal
  • Avoid certain medications such as topical antibiotics or systemic anti-inflammatories (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, Motrin or Advil) to minimize bruising
  • If you have a history of cold sores or fever blisters, advanced viral suppression may be required to prevent reactivation of the virus
  • This treatment is not indicated for pregnant or nursing females as it requires topical numbing

Microneedling is safe for most people. However, people with bleeding disorders or women who are pregnant or nursing should consult with a doctor before having the procedure done.

During your consultation, the number of treatments required will be discussed with you.
The professionals at Dr. Christie’s office will help you work out a treatment plan that aligns with your budget and unique aesthetic needs.
