Stress Less, Age Less

August 12th, 2025

Dr. Christie Prendergast

At the heart of our Quality of Life (QoL) Program is a simple but powerful insight: chronic stress accelerates aging.

This is especially true for high-achieving individuals who operate under constant pressure to exceed expectations in the workplace, while simultaneously trying to keep up with the demands of their personal life.

In biological terms, stress occurs when your body perceives a threat to its internal balance, or homeostasis. Maintaining homeostasis involves a series of tightly regulated physiological processes (temperature regulation, blood glucose, fluid balance and other important systems that keep the body’s internal environment safe and healthy.

When triggered by stress, such as emotional strain, lack of sleep or mental overload, the brain responds by activating a cascade of hormonal and neurological responses  to maintain homeostasis. From an evolutionary standpoint, a stress response (often referred to as a fight or flight response), is designed to provide short-term benefits, such as increased blood flow, alertness and energy mobilization). While these are protective in temporary situations, long-term chronic stress disrupts cognition, emotional regulation, digestion, metabolism, immunity and overall cellular health, ultimately driving inflammation, burnout, and premature aging.

The Challenge of Managing Stress

Successfully managing stress requires a comprehensive approach. Practices like mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), regular movement, restorative sleep, and strong social connections are proven to reduce cortisol levels and restore nervous system balance. Nutritional support like magnesium, omega-3s, and adaptogenic herbs have also been shown to support stress resilience.

Although many modalities for stress management exist,  lifestyle changes can be hard to set in motion, and many traditional tools may feel challenging to implement. High-functioning individuals often normalize stress or resist tools they perceive as passive or slow-acting. Stress is shaped by genetics, life experiences, and how each individual’s brain processes and perceives challenge.

This is why I believe in combining biological insight with personalized, tech-enabled therapy to disrupt the stress-aging cycle at its core.

Introducing TMS + ExoMind: Brain-Based Stress Resilience

I am excited to introduce transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) into our practice—now enhanced by BTL’s ExoMind interface. This advanced, non-invasive technology offers a cutting-edge way to support cognitive and emotional health, especially in individuals with high life demands and limited time.

TMS works by delivering gentle, MRI-strength magnetic pulses to a region of the brain called the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex—a hub for decision-making, emotional regulation, and executive function. These pulses stimulate neuronal activity and help rebalance brain circuitry involved in stress, anxiety, and depression. The result is enhanced mood, improved clarity, and renewed mental energy.

TMS is FDA-approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder, with decades of clinical data behind its safety and effectiveness. ExoMind modernizes the experience with a more intelligent, efficient and personalized interface, making this powerful therapy more accessible and precise—in just 30 minutes.

We encourage all patients to schedule an introductory session to experience the benefits of TMS firsthand and discover how it can positively impact your emotional wellbeing.

Let’s support your brain, reduce stress, and help you age with clarity and calm.
